Going Away Party!

I felt like I couldn't leave Seymour without throwing a going away bash of some sort!  So that's what we did!  I called up Jackson Point and arranged a little gathering there for dinner and drinks!

Party Hosts!
Curty and I bought pitchers for the crew and had tickets flying around like crazy for all of the people at the party.  Mom bought a huge cake from Sam's Club which mirrored my graduation cake!

"Seymour" of ya' later!

A lot of my aunts, uncles, and family friends stopped in, which meant a lot. Bill and Carol even dropped by before Bill had to fly to Italy the next day for work! It was nice to see everyone!

Uncle Dale & Aunt Rhonda

Jeanne and Lyssa were there of course amongst others who stopped in to say hello, or head to Jackson Point on Friday night! The Bayer's moved their Friday night fish fry, which is quite and honor. Lyssa and I had the job of cutting the cake and dispersing it amongst the party.  Everyone who ate cake was easy to spot because Mom had ordered black frosting again (similar to graduation).  The black frosting stains your mouth like mad!

Serving Bill the cake!

After dinner we mingled with the group and things started heating up once the Video DJ started setting up.  Lyssa took it upon her self to make sure they played our song "Hurt So Good".  We had some good dancing tunes throughout the night.

Joel's Boys: Ben Schnick, and Mike

A lot of Joel's friends stopped by to celebrate my leaving, haha.  It was hard to say goodbye to everyone, but we celebrated in style and Lyssa and I did what we normally do, danced alone.

The Regent Trio

Dancing alone, per ush. Pulling way to many guitar moves!

Lyssa, Paul, Me and Mark!

Mark and Paul even made the trip from Appleton to hang out and see the fools we were making of ourselves! We had so much cake and were counting on Bergsy to be the one to polish it off.  He did make a good dent in it, but sometimes a good glass of beer will curb anyone's sweet tooth!

Sweet tooth Bergs

After the party had drawn to a close, Curty loaded us up in the mini-van and we headed back to the Marsh residence to continue the fun over cake and snacks we found in the pantry.  Chris was on a roll, and as usual, I was a bad influence on him.  Haha, that's why we get a long.  Jodi also came home with us to stick around and see the festivities through to the very end.  What a champ!

After party crew, eating the cake and treats!

Chris is tired.
It was one great party, and I am so happy that I got to see so many people before taking off to Pittsburgh!  I am truly going to miss everyone, but hey, you're only a flight away!

Paul's 26.2!

Paul was training throughout our Europe vacation and during the Spring to complete his first Marathon.  He decided to run the Cellcom Marathon in Green Bay on May 15th!

I unfortunately had to stay in Madison to help finish the house because we were attempting to close on it, and had a bunch of things to do to get it ready.  I drove down to Milwaukee with my mom to pick up Uncle Buck after Jay's bachelor party.  He was a champ and such a help as we got Kendall cleaned up and fixed.

I was watching my phone and email for updates on Paul's progress and excited to see that he finished strong!  I found him later that afternoon with his feet in the air and relaxing.  He was already taking the stairs backwards to ease the pain.  Paul is continuing to run, and now we've signed up to run a half marathon in Erie, PA in early September.  I think that means I should get my but in gear soon!  Once I get pictures of Paul's race, I will surely update the post!

Dr. Paul Anderson

Besides gathering all of our things for the big move out to Pittsburgh, another big event we were preparing for was Paul’s graduation from the University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine and Public Health!  After four years of hard work, numerous tests, long hours of clinical rotations, moving around the state to different rotations, he crossed the finish line!  It was a wonderful event and started early in the morning.  I got dressed up and went over to Paul’s house to pick up Paul and his parents in the Hyundai.  I forgot to mention that Paul’s dad tore his rotator cuff recently and is slowly recovering from a very delicate and impressive laparoscopic surgery.  He had some large tears in his shoulder and is working hard to recover and get back to work and life.  He’s in a sling and is currently managing to do everything one handed.  I was hoping that my car would be big enough to allow him to move freely in and out of the tiny doors.  They had the van with a trailer which isn’t the easiest to take downtown, so we decided to try the Hyundai on for size.

Thankfully we all fit snuggly in the car and made our way to the memorial union theater.  Jack, Kathy, and I went upstairs to find a seat in the balcony.  I am sure it seemed like yesterday that they were there for the white coat ceremony.  How fast the past four years have gone!  I met Paul while he was studying for Step 1 and now he’s an official doctor.  It seems like yesterday.
UW-SMPH Departments Represented!

DeVita gave an excellent speech, humility is key.

The ceremony was beautiful.  As we walked in, a small quartet was playing on stage.  Then UW faculty walked and lined the stage, representing every department in the medical school with Dean Golden, Dr. Patrick McBride, and the chosen class speakers.  In walks the UW-SMPH class of 2011, Paul Anderson was second in line with a front row seat for the wonderful speeches that were to follow.  Then the students lined up to receive their scarlet and green hoods to signal Doctor of Medicine.  Paul and DeVita had to bend down a bit to allow the hoods to be placed over their heads.  It was fun to see everyone crossing the stage and shaking hands.

Paul was second to walk across the stage, Congratulations!

Tall boys of the class, DeVita and Anderson!
After a large, warm round of applause for the graduating physicians of 2011, we filed outside to watch the class photo and take a few pictures by Memorial Union.  You could smell the brats frying and there were already pouring beers for people who were camping out on the terrace for graduation Friday.  We posed for pictures, went through the brunch line a few times, and then walked back to the ramp to bring Paul back to his apartment so he and his parents could load up the van and trailer.  I went back to my house to do some odds and ends before the evening gathering!

No graduation is complete without the union chair, Paul fit well!

In the afternoon, we all met up at Starbucks to get the half price Frappucunios that were on special, and then Jack, Kathy, Paul, and I went across the road to grab a bite to eat.   We weren’t particularly hungry, and probably should have skipped Panera Bread as well, but it was fun to chat over soup and salad.  After hanging out, we had my mom drop us off at the new Union South for the Wisconsin Medical Alumni Association dinner!  It was our first time in the new campus building and we are sad that we won’t be able to use it more, because it’s amazing.  Paul went off exploring the building and found a nice sports bar that’s set up similar to Memorial Union.

We sat with Ravi, T Chang, and Josh Block for dinner right by the buffet.  We weren’t expecting there to be such a big spread, but we had our fill again!  Paul walked away with two plates, carbo loading for the Cellcom Marathon!  I was able to chat it up with Ashley (recently returned from Europe with Foley!) and Anna to catch up on some laughs.  The dance floor opened up and Paul and I only went out for a dance or two before running down the road in heels to catch our safe ride.

Paul and Ravi, tank mates!  We'll be visiting Iowa hopefully soon!
Mike, Ashley, Me, Paul  - Roomates parting ways...
It is hard to believe that the evening gathering might be the last time we see some of Paul’s med school buddies for a while, at least until reunions!  It has been so much fun getting to know everyone and meet all of the wonderful people in the UW-SMPH 2011 class.  I am excited to meet the residents Paul is going to be working with out in Pittsburgh, in addition to the incoming medical school that I will be joining!  What an exciting beginning as we say goodbye to Wisconsin.

Paul's Birthday and Our 2 Year Anniversary!

I really wanted to get the most out of Wisconsin during our last month there.  What says Wisconsin better than beer and Brewers?!?!  For Paul's Birthday I organized a little Milwaukee get away.  We went down on a Tuesday after I was done babysitting Drew.
My best friend (below age 5)... He's my buddy and I miss him madly!

We arrived at the park, set up a small tailgate with chicken brats, a beer and some chippy chips.  It was nice to relax and eat our healthy little tailgate.  The boys next to us were getting wild and said they were from the college of Sun Prarie, which they were obiviously in high school and breaking all the rules.  They entertained us as their hearts started racing when the bike cops scooted past. Hahah.

It was a week game so the crowds weren't very busy and I was able to score some amazing tickets.  We were 3 from the front close behind Prince Fielder at first base.  We weren't able to sit in our original seats, so we just sat close by and lucked out.  Some guy told us just to sit down and not worry about being a little bit closer to the action.  He was right!

After relaxing through the first innings, the excitement escalated quickly.  The pitcher from the Padres hit a foul grounder to the guy (in the photo above wearing the helmet on the bottom right) retrieving balls.  He feilded it and tossed it right to Pauls hands!  It was AWESOME.  We caught a ball, which was completely unreal!  Paul gave it to me and then began the flack that we started taking from the crowd.  They were up in our face and each of them had a case why we should hand the foul ball over... We kept it of course!

It was exciting to have that MLB ball resting in my pocket.  What great luck.  Well the luck continued as the Brew Crew was warming up in the outfield.  Gomez was tossing it back and forth, and then the last toss went straight to Paul's hands AGAIN!!  This one caught us by surprise.  I didn't even stand up because I had no idea what was going on!  I think I was texting like a turd!  Paul saw everyone else standing up, so he decided to leave his chair, and the Paul went right into his mittens!  I know he's definitely got the height advantage, but he didn't lean left or right, but simply put his hands high.  Let's just say that after that we didn't have the courage to take a picture of both of them.  We were taking a lot of heat from the crowd.  There weren't any little kids around, so we kept them both.  Two MLB balls on our 2 year anniversary, can't beat that!

That night we stayed at the Hilton on the River.  It was a nice spot to crash.  We took our time and lounged around in the morning before heading to our next  Milwaukee adventure, the Lakefront Brewery!  I had heard great things about this Brewery tour from Trip Advisor, and it was extremely reasonable, so we headed to the brewery!

The tour was short, but good, we enjoyed our beer while waltzing around the brewery, but I'll be the first to say that this was no Slab City Brewing, LLC!  It just didn't feel right going into a brewery without firing up the label maker or helping clean growlers!  Oh how I miss the days of child labor... what a fun time!

We had a great few days in Milwaukee, it was nice to see some of the attractions, and you can never go to too many Brewer games!  It's been a great 2 years, Happy 26th Paul!

Paris, our last foriegn destination!

Unfortunately I am going to have to cut this short and let the pictures do the talking because finishing this post is keeping me from updating in real-time about all of the crazy fun stuff I've been up to!

Right away after getting to Paris, Paul and I bought metro tickets and headed downtown to the Eiffel Tower so we were able to go on a Thursday instead of Friday evening.  It was dusk so we went walking around by the tower and strolled past the tunnel were Princess Diana passed away in the car accident.

We had an amazing night climbing the Eiffel Tower!  There were 669 steps to the second level, and we were watching the brave and rich souls go all the way to the tip-top in the elevator.  You can see the top swaying, so they say it's not for those with weak stomachs.

Our next day began with the included bus tour of the city.  We went downtown and drove past the Louvre and other Paris attractions including the Eiffel Tower again.  We stopped at Notre Dam and walked across the bridge to go inside.  The line moved fast, so we were inside in no time looking around and observing a service.

After our run in and out of Notre Dam, we went back to the bus to hop on quickly.  Apparently it's illegal for coach buses to drop off by Notre Dam, so when we got off, we had to run quickly.  In addition, we also had to be by the meeting point, pronto so we could get on the bus as fast as possible.  Paul and I were there first and most of the group was trailing behind significantly.  Our driver also showed up early, so it was just Paul and I on the bus.  The plan backfired, as the tour lady was waving her hands like mad trying to get the group to run to the bus and get back on.  We of course were stopped by the Paris po-po and had to watch them rant back and forth in french for a half hour.  Surprisingly enough, this was another time were our group walked away without a fine.

We stopped for pictures of the Eiffel Tower from the park and then they dropped us off downtown.  Paul and I didn't sign up for any optional excursions, so we had the afternoon to ourselves to do Museums!  We quick went in and got our 2 day Museum pass at a small gallery and then went to a larger one before going to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa and other bigger attractions!

After the Museums we headed to the church of stained glass, and it was beautiful!  The glass was all pictures that depicted biblical stories.  It was a narrow church, but the walls of glass were impressively tall!

After a long day of museums, Paul and I wondering for a while until we stumbled upon a restaurant with outdoor seating.  We ordered the special with included a drink, salad, main dish and dessert.  It was delicious, and it felt really good to get off our feet finally!

After dinner I believe we made our way to the Arch de Triumph!  It was included in our museum pass so we were able to go up to the top and see the Eiffel Tower light up at night.  It was so neat to see it from a distance rather than underneath it!  We took a lot of pictures and then decided to call it a night.  Paul and I went quickly to the Arch, so we thought we could use our same ticket to get onto the metro and head back home.  Of course, the first time we decided to brave it, we were stopped by the metro cops and pulled aside to check our tickets. Luckily we skirted through and our tickets were valid.  The fine is steep, so we're glad we made it through that one.

The next day was our last breakfast with the group because our tour was over, ahhhh.  We said our goodbyes and took pictures with the group.  It was a bittersweet ending.

Paul and I checked our bags at the hotel and headed off to the Palace of Versailles.  It was a long train ride there, and then another painfully long wait in line.  Our museum pass didn't give us any priority, so we had to wait in like with the rest of the crew.  It took an hour or two before we got to the doors.  The gold was beautiful and it's hard to imagine this was made purely for the royal family.  That king was obviously not as frugal and Paul and I.  We had the classic scenario of a baby screaming behind us in line for a while.  It was so hot that i was using my umbrella for shade, and the kid must have been roasting and dehydrated.

After a warm day away from the city, we stopped back at the hotel, grabbed our backpacks and headed out to a hotel by the airport.  It was late Saturday evening that we arrived, a shuttle bus took us directly from the airport to the hotel.  Haha, instantly we realized why people only stay one evening in this hotel, specifically before flying out the next morning.  When we said we were staying for three nights, I bet the reception staff was confused!

The hotel was in the middle of nowhere, there was a tiny village down the road, but unfortunately our first full day in the hotel was Easter Sunday so there wasn't a soul for miles.  We walked into town to find a church.  The church bells were ringing every hour, but there was definitely no service on Easter which gives me the impression there's not longer a parish for that church.  We tried twice to get in, and then we finally gave up, went for a stroll, found a graveyard, and headed back to the hotel.

The worst part about it was the challenge that we were almost out of food at this point and surviving off of very little.  Paul decided to go for a 19 mile run with minor food and minor water supply so that was a bit difficult.  After he got back, our only choice was to go to the airport to try to find some food.  Once we went down the escalators and saw a lonely open coffee shop we hugged and screamed, never so happy to see overpriced airport food!

We at a restaurant and loved the dinner; so much that we came back the second night!  The next morning we went for a morning stroll to see if anything was open in the village, and to our surprise we found a cute, family bakery.  Paul had a large roll, and then went back in for seconds to store away for lunch.  It was a great find!

We flew out the next day, exhausted and ready to be home.  It was an amazing trip, and it went by very quickly!  I'm so excited that we had this wonderful opportunity to explore Europe.  It made us very appreciative of all that we have here to explore within our expansive borders.  We surely take for granted public toilets, healthy food, spacious hotels and luxury living!  I hope we'll be able to go abroad sometime soon as Paul begins his residency training.  UPMC has hospitals in Europe and it would be an impressive opportunity to fly overseas and rotate there.  We will see in due time I guess!

Now that my blogging of our trip is coming to an end, I will be more prompt in keeping the blog updated on some of most recent and exciting adventures!
